In addition to the data itself, ZFS stores a "Merkle Tree" of checksum information about the same data. The tree of checksums is used to rapidly identify if any data is incorrect when compared to what is expected. This comparisson happens as you read or write data, and is completely automatic. Should data be found to be incorrect or corrupt, ZFS automatically replaces the bad data with a known-good copy of the same data, stored elsewhere on the storage system. This whole process occurs as you interact with your data and has a zero cost to performance.
In addition to these automtic mechanisms, there is also a scrubbing mechanism that can be periodically performed. ZFS Scrubs check all the data on each pool for any consistency problems, and corrects them as it finds them.
